There are two painful realizations we all must accept that have nothing to do with science or personal beliefs; first, is that the cap & trade idea is dead and the second is that alternative energy is not ready so we need practical solutions now to give it time to be more efficient. Activists have spent so much time worrying about punitive economics solutions they have pushed technology to the background, while head-in-the-sand types on the other side have insisted our much smarter grandchildren will be able to solve greenhouse gas issues much more easily. Regardless, cap and trade is a dead idea so rather than people insisting they need to redouble their efforts to ‘raise awareness’ (for those 200 Ayoreo Indians in Paraguay who still do not know about global warming) they need to embrace solutions that will lessen the impact today while technology becomes cost effective in the future.
It isn’t easy because, when advocates are entrenched in government, changing minds is difficult. In London, despite agreement in the Copenhagen Accord that money would be balanced between mitigation and adaptation, only 11% of actual money is going toward solutions and strategies.
